Which sex toy materials are safe?

Materialen sekstoys

There are many materials for sex toys. In this article we will discuss the properties of different materials and why they are and are not safe for sex.

What materials are there?

Harmful/poisonous

  • Jelly
  • Toys containing phthalates

Porous

  • TPE
  • TPR
  • PVC/Vinyl
  • Latex/rubber
  • Elastomer

Non-porous

  • Silicone
  • Glass
  • Metal

Harmful/poisonous

Materials such as jelly and materials containing phthalates/phthalates should be avoided at all times, these are substances that are highly toxic, especially in contact with mucous membranes. These toys often have a transparent and very shiny appearance. Dirt, dust and hair often stick to these toys very easily. At first glance they sometimes seem harmless, but unconsciously they often leak a type of oil that is very harmful. You cannot prevent this with a condom, because oil and condoms do not go together.

These materials that have been used in children's toys are forbidden in The Netherlands since 1999 because of the contact with mucous membranes when children put it in their mouth. We find it very strange that there are no rules for sex toys, while there is also long-term contact between the material and the mucous membranes.

Porous

Porous materials are materials with small openings that provide flexibility. The disadvantage of these openings is that bacteria can easily enter and they are difficult to clean.

These porous sex toys should preferably be avoided, this is not always possible with some types of male masturbators. Please note that these are cleaned extra well and only used for personal use. This type of toy is best combined with a water-based lubricant. Latex does go well with silicone lubricant and not with an oil-based lubricant.

Non-porous

When choosing a material for a sex toy, it is best to choose a material that is not porous. Such as silicone, glass and metal. Silicone is a material that is flexible but not porous. The big advantage of non-porous sex toys is that they are easy to clean without leaving harmful bacteria behind.

Silicone

Silicone is the best known and most used safe material for sex toys. It is widely used because it is both firm and flexible. With a silicone toy you are basically always right.

With silicone toys you have to be careful not to use silicone based lubricant. With glass and metal you can use silicone, water and oil based lubricant.

Glass

Glass sex toys are a little less well-known. Despite what you might think about glass, these toys are often very strong. A big advantage of glass is that it is good for playing with heat or cold. You can read more about this in our blog: playing with hot and cold sensations.

Metal

There are different types of metals, not all of which are equally suitable as a sex toy. Materials that are suitable: stainless steel, chromed metal and aluminium. The advantage of metal toys is that they are nice and heavy, which can give a more intense feeling.
